GP Workforce There continues to be a significant shortage of GPs in the PNMML area, as there is in WA and all of Australia. This situation is unlikely to change for about five years until increased medical student numbers will finish their GP training. The worst affected areas in the local area are the City of Wanneroo, and east of the Mitchell Freeway. |

Outer Metropolitan Incentives Some outer metropolitan areas are eligible for Australian government support. This support includes:
Recruiting Overseas Trained Doctors The rules for recruiting overseas doctors are complex. Department of Health WA “Area of Need” status, and DOHA “District of Workforce Shortage” status need to be obtained by prospective employers. Generally speaking, practices in outer metropolitan area are eligible to apply. Recruiting agencies, such as the Australian Medical Association (AMA), may be able to assist at no cost to practices if the length of appointment is at least 12 months. PNMML also provides letters of support for outer metropolitan practices seeking “Area of Need” status. For further information visit Overseas Trained Doctors In WA - Information for employers and Doctor Connect. The Workforce Branch of WA Department of Health can help with enquiries – contact Nicole D’Costa on 08 92222476 or email nicole.d’costa@health.wa.gov.au After Hours Clinics After Hours clinics may qualify for “Area of Need” status. It is therefore possible for inner metropolitan practices to recruit non vocationally registered “Other Medical Practitioners”, including overseas trained doctors, to work after hours. For further information visit DOHA After Hours Other Medical Practitioners (AHOMPs) Program. Medical Students The University of Western Australia (UWA) and the University of Notre Dame (UND) are always seeking good general practices to train medical students.
