Art Yo - Art Therapy Program

Art Yo is ‘creative expression’ for young people aged 13-17 years who are experiencing emotional issues (eg. depression, anxiety, low self-esteem) or stress which is compromising their sense of well-being.

The goal of the group is to provide opportunities for young people to identify and express their feelings, encourage positive coping strategies, and increase their self confidence in managing the significant relationships in their life.

The focus of the group program is preventative, and is about providing support to young people at critical times in their life. A formal mental health diagnosis is not an essential criteria for inclusion in this program. There is no cost for this program.

Creative expression for emotional well-being

Creative expression through art can provide a very therapeutic technique for young people who are experiencing emotional problems, including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and lack of identity. One of the greatest outlets for powerful and overwhelming feelings is through art. All children, regardless of their limitations or struggles, have feelings that are often hard to describe and give meaning to. Creative expression can contribute to young people releasing these feelings, constructing meaning, forming identity, and achieving emotional well-being. Kristyn Crow, Helping your child deal with emotions through creative expression : 2006.

If you know a young person who is:
  • Open to expressing their feelings and thoughts in a group
  • Willing to listen to others
  • Interested in gaining support from others to better manage the challenges in their life
If so, then this group is likely to be of benefit to them.

If you know a young person who is:
  • Suicidal
  • Acutely psychotic
  • Facing extreme crisis or addiction
  • Violent or aggressive?

Then they are NOT suitable for this group.

The project will be co-facilitated by a Psychologist and an Art Therapist, each experienced in applying a variety of artistic approaches, and facilitating group processes with young people. The facilitators will conduct a 8 week program, accommodating 8-12 vulnerable or ‘at risk’ young people aged 13-17 years.

The next Art Yo program will be running Wednesday 2nd May 2012 to Wednesday 20th June 2012.

A GP or Psychologist (School or Private) Referral is essential to participate in this group. Please direct young people to their local GP or their School Student Services.
