Osteoarthritis of the Knee (OAK) Self Management Program

The OAK course is due to resume in early-mid 2012.

The Osteoarthritis of the Knee (OAK) Self Management Program is designed to help individuals with osteoarthritis to effectively manage their condition by equipping participants with the knowledge and skills they need to make long-term behaviour changes.

Researched and designed by Arthritis WA, the program is delivered by qualified health professionals and peer factilitators.

Osteoarthritis of the Knee (OAK) Self Management Program

Participants will receive:

  • disease education
  • advice on exercise and joint protection
  • healthy lifestyle options

The goals of the program are for patients to achieve and maintain clinically proven outcomes, including:

  • reduced pain
  • improved physical function
  • increased general wellbeing

The program consists of 8 x 2½ hour education sessions over 8 weeks.  Specific topics include:

  • Learning about osteoarthritis
  • Pain management techniques
  • Osteoarthritis and medications
  • Activity and exercise for osteoarthritis
  • Falls prevention and balance
  • Nutrition & healthy eating for arthritis
  • Emotions and arthritis
  • Complementary therapy

Osteoarthritis of the Knee (OAK) Self Management Program is offered to patients who are diagnosed and referred by their GP.

Perth North Metro Medicare Local is pleased to work in partnership with Arthritis WA to deliver the OAK Self Management Program, the first of its kind in the north metropolitan region.
